A brief to Roth

Dear Michael,

So Wes is invested in Raytheon, an armaments maker, and SEWI (Students for Ending the War in Iraq) is up in arms about it.

The ancient Romans, whose epic tale could be entitled “War and Peace,” had a saying: “To have peace, prepare for war.” Margaret Thatcher took the occasion of President Reagan’s funeral to remind us that his decision to station Pershing Missiles made by Raytheon, I believe, in Western Europe, was instrumental in ending the Cold War without a shot being fired.

Michael, an educator should be punching holes in walls of ignorance. What he should not be doing is pandering to students happily stuck in the sandbox stage of development. Weapons keep SEWI safe and sound (well, maybe not sound) in its playpen on High. Or is it playing a grownup game? Its name does not declare it opposes weapons and war; its name declares it opposes the war in Iraq, which happens to be a political football.

Michael, I hope you’re not playing ball with or playing along with SEWI (sounds like a pig call), because if you are, you’re playing a dicey game with Wes’s tax exemption.
