Sports Shorts: Dave Velardo ’08 captures third place finish at Duke Invitational

Coming off a victory in the season-opening Trinity Invitational, senior golfer Dave Velardo continued to impress with a third place finish in the 128-man field at the Duke Invitational. Velardo fired two rounds of 73 for a four-over par total of 146, good enough to break the Wesleyan scoring record at the event. Chris Dejoh of Skidmore and Travis Dewire of Babson finished in a tie for first, just one stroke ahead of Velardo at three-over par 145.

Eli Wilson ’09 recovered from a first round 87 to card a 73 in round two and finished second among Wesleyan golfers. Dan DeRienzo ’11 and Rob McCourt ’08 both finished with two-day totals of 174 for Wesleyan’s third best score. The Cards finished 20th of 26 teams in the team competition.

Lauren Russman ’09 competed admirably in her first ever collegiate event, shooting a solid round of 80 on Sunday. Look for an article on Russman’s weekend and the up-and-coming women’s golf program in Friday’s issue.
