Sports short: Women’s soccer

The Cardinals bounced back from their disappointing season opener loss to Williams with a 4-0 romp at Mount Holyoke Wednesday night. The victory should help the tone for a high level of play for the rest of the season as Wesleyan overwhelmed Mount Holyoke from the start, playing with intensity and sharp form.

“We had a good game with contributions from all over the field. We played solid defense and offense and [were] a coordinated team unit,” said tri-captain Marcia Whitehead ’08.

The Cards came out firing on all cylinders, scoring in the third minute on a strike from Taylor Stevenson ’10. Kaitlin Ashley ’11 got on the scoreboard for the first time since joining the team in the 30th minute, and was followed quickly by the first of two goals from Nicole Gray ’08.

Wesleyan entered halftime with a comfortable three-goal lead after outshooting Mount Holyoke by a count of 20-3. Gray put the tallied the final goal of the evening with a goal in the 88th minute off an assist from Becky Malik ’09.

“Mount Holyoke was not prepared for our speed up front, or for our possession and passing game which allowed us to control the tempo of the game,” Whitehead said.

In addition to a solid offensive performance, Gavi Elkind ’09 and Andrea Giuliano ’09 took turns in goal, giving the team its first shutout of the season.

“Our goalies split time and did a good job coming off their lines to handle some longer balls that Mount Holyoke was trying to chip over our defenders,” Whitehead said.

The Cardinals are now 1-1 (0-1 NESCAC) on the season. Wesleyan will face Trinity in Hartford this Saturday at 11 a.m.
