The Cine-Files

It is with immense sadness that Will Di Novi and I bid farewell to Wesleyan and conclude our Film Series column.

The Film Series is an important forum that enables all of you to see films on a big screen that may not be readily available otherwise. To those who will be here next year, I implore you to take advantage of it. Use it as an additional class to take, a place to pick up girls, an escape from Middletown, or a way to bond with friends. It’s never too late to start, and you can help us end on a strong note this last week by coming to our last screenings.

Also, for those of you who are new to our Film Series, the senior thesis films will be screened during reading week: If you want to contribute to conversations in all the right circles then this is a must-see event. So come support your fellow Wesleyan students who have put their blood and sweat into these films. More importantly, when they become famous filmmakers, you can say you saw their first works!

“Pan’s Labyrinth”
(Spain, D: Guillermo del Toro, 2006)
Friday, May 4, 8 p.m. $4

A young girl imagines a fantastic world of monstrous toads and magical fauns in order to escape the harsh reality of fascist 1944 Spain. Visually mesmerizing, this dark “Alice in Wonderland” story is not to be missed, especially on the big screen.

“American Graffiti”
(USA, D: George Lucas, 1973)
Saturday, May 5, 8 p.m. Free.

Come enjoy a night that includes Impalas and Thunderbirds, first kisses, rock and roll, Mel’s Drive-In, a young Harrison Ford, Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard, and a pre-“Star Wars” George Lucas. Perfect for the last movie of the 2006-2007 Film Series, “American Graffiti” chronicles the last night a group of high school graduates spend cruising and messing around before they must leave for college or find a job. And while, yes, we have already graduated from high school, many of us seniors are about to embark on a similar transition as we will turn to a new page for our life beyond college. Whether you want to sympathize with characters on the brink of making monumental life decisions or nostalgically relive the heyday of high school, please come enjoy and celebrate the last Film Series movie of the school year.
