The baseball team split their two games this week, moving their record to 12-21 overall. On Tuesday, the Cards dropped their final home game of the season to Westfield State 12-7. The Cards then traveled to Elms College on Wednesday, where they unleashed an offensive onslaught on the Blazers, coming away with a 14-4 victory.
After dropping a three-game series to Williams last weekend and falling out of the NESCAC playoff picture, the Cards were ready to move on and make a good showing against the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) regular-season champions, Westfield State.
The Owls broke out for four run in the fourth inning, turning a close 4-3 score into a five run lead, and never looked back. The Cards mounted a solid comeback and pulled to as close as 9-7 in the bottom of the seventh but they just did not have enough gas in the tank to take down the Owls, who won the contest 12-7. Alex Mautone ’07 led the Cards offensively, driving home Brice Kelly ’10 twice in the game. Mautone also added an RBI in the Cards’ three run seventh inning.
On Wednesday the Cards traveled to Elms College in Holyoke, Massachusetts looking to break a six-game losing streak. The Cards unleashed an offensive barrage against the helpless Elms College pitching staff. In what was the first ever meeting between the two schools, the Cards were unmerciful machines of offensive production, shelling out 18 hits for 14 runs on the day. Mautone was a stud at the plate once again, picking up three base hits, including a pair of doubles that produced four RBIs. Drew Dominguez ’09 and Rob Coughlin ’07 both went 3-for-5 on the day with three runs scored each. Dusty Mones ’09 also put in a strong pitching performance for the Cards, throwing five shutout innings and yielding only one hit with six strikeouts to snag the win.
The Cards are set to finish out their season this Saturday, May 5 with a double header at Trinity College.
