Sports Shorts: Women’s lacrosse

This weekend capped off a historic regular season for the women’s lacrosse team, as the Cardinals defeated Bates 10-9 on Saturday to earn the third seed in the NESCAC tournament. The high seed brought the first round of the playoffs to Wesleyan for the first time in team history, but the Cardinals lost to Amherst, ending their season.

History almost had to wait, however, as Bates, despite sporting a 2-7 league record, proved scrappy enough to take the Cards to overtime in a game that remained close throughout. Neither team led by more than two goals throughout the contest, but after a Bates goal with five minutes remaining to take the lead, it seemed as if the Bobcats would steal the win in front of their home crowd.

Unfortunately for Bates, Wes had plenty of fight left, and rookie Erin McCarthy ’09 continued her late-game heroics by tying up the game on a free position shot with just under three minutes left to play, forcing overtime.

Although Bates struck first in overtime, Sophia Kim ’08 took the fight straight to the Bobcats as she bulled her way through the entire defense to even the score just two minutes later. As time ran down, Kim scored again, ripping a shot past the Bobcat goalie for the overtime win.

Courtney Tetrault ’07 broke the team record for assists in a season during the game, upping her total to 28, while Kim had four goals and an assist as well.

Exhausted from the drive home from Maine on Sunday, the Cards couldn’t get over the hump against Amherst in the first round of the NESCAC playoffs. The team came out flat against the Lord Jeffs, falling behind early and never recovering. The game and Wesleyan’s season ended with a 13-5 Amherst victory.
