I would like to extend my gratitude to Brittany Mitchell for her astute characterization of The Argus as an embarrassment to our institution.
As Wesleyan students, we are often seeking to prove our intelligence, saying that “yes, we are just as good as those students that attend Ivy League institutions,” and as a fellow student, I would like to be able to believe this, but when I pick up a copy of The Argus and find so many errors, spelling and grammatical, I am at a loss as to how the editors even wrote their college application essays. The guidelines for submission state, “The Argus reserves the right to edit all submissions for spelling, grammar, and length,” but I have yet to read even one completely corrected article and I can’t even begin to describe the disgust I feel when I read articles full of toilet humor, curse words and allusions to masturbation.* I understand freedom of speech, but I wonder how the editors could be so blind to the fact that such poorly written and crass work undermines their intelligence that they strive so hard to prove?
If you want an example, look no further than the front page. In the February 16th issue, the caption to the photo on the front page read, “’365′ Actor Jermaine Lewis ’09 REHERSES as Director Jessica Posner ’09 looks on.” Pretty shameful, don’t you think?
