Competing in their only home meet of the season this past Saturday, the Cardinals’ men’s and women’s track teams did not disappoint, garnering multiple first place finishes, including a victory by Mike Moody ’10 in javelin, breaking the school record for the third week in a row.
“We were lucky enough to have great weather and a lot of fan support,” said Lisa Sussman ’09. “I think, because of this, everyone was more excited than usual and had a lot of team spirit.”
In the 400-meter dash, Steph O’Brien ’08 took first place, with Sussman and Kara Schnoes ’07 finishing in third and fifth respectively.
In the 3,000-meter race, Ellen Davis ’07 took first, finishing just three slower than the 26-year-old school record in the event. Lucia Pier ’08 took second, while Anna Schindler ’09, Megan Kretz ’07, and Sara Rosenberg ’10 rounded out the Wesleyan runners, finishing in fourth, fifth, and seventh.
The dynamic quadruple of Abby Austin ’07, Sussman, Schnoes, and O’Brien had a great day, coming in second in the 4×100 meter event and first in the 4×400 meter race.
Sam Grover ’08 had a great day for the men, finishing first in the triple jump, second in the long jump, and fifth in the high jump.
Moody surprised no one, but wowed everyone, by breaking the Wesleyan record in the javelin for the third week in a row. His throw of 187 feet, 11 inches broke the record he set a week ago by just over a foot.
“It’s so much fun to watch Mike throw,” said Amy Lum ’10. “We all look forward to it at each meet. He’s such a champ.”
The men’s team was particularly strong in the 3,000-meter race, sweeping first through seventh places. Alex Battaglino ’07 came in first, with Jon King ’07, Owen Kiely ’06, Mike Brady ’07, Sean Watson ’08, Jonah Blumstein ’09, and Sam Kurtis ’10 following him in order.
Dan McLaughlin ’07 finished second in the 400-meter hurdles, and Nate Huddell ’07 finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Both the men’s and women’s teams will head to Williams this Saturday for the Little Three meet.
