On Wednesday, the baseball team traveled to Cambridge, MA to take on the M.I.T. Beavers. Both teams evidently brought their bats, and the Beavers pulled out a 14-11 victory.
The Cards got out to an early 5-0 lead before the Beavers tied the score in the third inning. Wesleyan then summoned another offensive surge, scoring four runs in the fourth inning. The Beavers then scored twice in the fourth inning and three times in the sixth inning, giving them a 10-9 lead heading into the seventh inning. Garrett Lamborn ’09, in an excellent display of base running, manufactured the tying run by walking, advancing on a wild pitch, and scoring off an ensuing M.I.T. error.
The M.I.T squad did not let the game stay tied for long, however, as the Beavers got hot again in the bottom of the eighth inning, piling on four runs. The Cards, down four going into the ninth, knew that they needed to come out with a lot of energy. Lamborn led off for the Cards with a double to begin the inning. His pinch runner, Rob Coughlin ’07, would eventually score, but the Cards could not score again after getting runners on first and second with only one out. The Beavers took the game with a final score of 14-11 despite the Cards outing them 13-11.
The Cards hope to bring the same level of offensive intensity into their upcoming three-game NESCAC West series against Hamilton College. They will start the season at home on Friday at 4 p.m.
