Next week will be stressful for many, but those of you not completely overwhelmed can look forward to a week of interesting and diverse lectures, films, and performances highlighting different aspects of Muslim life and culture throughout the world as part of Wesleyan’s first annual Islam in Conversation Week.
Brought to you by many dedicated students in the Muslim Students Association, the Chaplain’s office, SBC, the Muslim Coalition of CT, and six different Wesleyan departments, next week’s events are geared towards an appreciation of cultural diversity in the Muslim world through exposure to various modes of artistic expression including films presented by their creators, photography, and Islamic calligraphy. We hope that the presentations of our guests will help start a thoughtful and meaningful dialogue about the different ways in which Islam is lived globally.
With students’ feedback, we carefully considered the kinds of issues to highlight, including Islamophobia in the media, the historic tension between Sunni and Shi’i Islam, and issues of peaceful coexistence.
