On Tuesday, the men’s basketball team broke its four-game losing streak with an 87-81 victory over Salve Regina in the team’s most prolific scoring night in over a month. In the second all-time meeting between the schools, the Cards received two 24-point efforts from both Nick Pelletier ’08 and Rob Kelly ’07.
After being held to 29 points in the first half, the Cards exploded for 58 second-half points, led by Pelletier. Facing a 43-39 deficit with over 13 minutes to go, the Cards caught fire from beyond the arc. The squad knocked home four consecutive baskets from three-point range, including the first two from Pelletier, with Jim Shepherd ’07 and Eric Winters ’08 pitching in toward a 51-45 advantage.
In the victory, Pelletier’s 24 points were a career high, while Kelly’s 10 rebounds along with his 24 points earned him his seventh double-double of the year. Shepherd, who had not scored in double figures since Jan. 15, broke out of his scoring slump with 18 points, 12 of them coming from three-point range.
This weekend, the Cards face two critical conference games. They finish off the regular season hosting Middlebury today at 7:30 p.m., before taking on Williams at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Currently, the team sits in 9th place in the NESCAC with a 2-5 conference record, just behind Middlebury (3-4). Earlier in the season, the Cards defeated Williams (4-3), although the Ephs were temporarily without their best player in Chris Rose.
