Cardinal Athletes of the Week

BEN BYERS ’07, men’s swimming

Leading the men’s team to a strong showing as host of the Cardinal Invitational last weekend, Byers won the 200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle, 1650-yard freestyle and 400-yard individual medley, while also racing the second leg on the Cardinals’ victorious 400-yard freestyle relay team. Late last month, Byers was named the men’s Division III Swimmer-of-the-Week by collegeswimming.com. After his impressive win in the 1000-yard freestyle against Amherst–Byers prevailed by 25 seconds, he improved his career record in the 1000-yard freestyle and 1650-yard freestyle in dual meets to 23-0. Last weekend, Byers won the 500 and 1650-yard freestyle handily while squeaking by in the 400-yard IM and 200-yard freestyle, winning each by about a second. Byers, who already owns school records in the 1000 and 1650-yard freestyle, will look to add more accolades to his résumé when the Cardinals take on Trinity this Saturday at noon.

AMANDA SHAPIRO ’08, women’s swimming

In the women’s swim team’s second place finish over the weekend to Brandeis, Amanda Shapiro ’08 once again re-wrote the record books for the Cardinals. Already the Wesleyan record holder in the 50, 100, and 200-yard breaststroke and 200 and 400 individual medley events, the co-captain and All-American added a sixth individual record to her resume, as she broke the 1998 school record in the 100 individual medley with a time of 1:03.11. Shapiro also finished in first place in the 50 and 200-yard butterfly, finishing over five seconds ahead of the second place finisher in the former event. The Miller Place, N.Y. native was also a part of the first place 400 medley and 400 free events. Last week, Shapiro was recognized as the National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week for her efforts in a dual meet against Amherst, where she finished in first place in the 50 and 100 breaststroke events. Her 3.81 margin of victory in the 100 breaststroke cleared the NCAA “B” cut for the event.
