Volleyball clinches second seed in next NESCAC tournament

The Cards emerged victorious last weekend, sweeping three matches in nine straight games against visitors Bowdoin, Colby and Bates. In the final weekend of NESCAC play, the Cards broke a four way tie for second place with Amherst, Conn. College, and Tufts, to claim the second seed in the NESCAC tournament taking place this coming weekend at Williams.

Friday night the Cards took on Bowdoin in a crowded gym and swept them in three close games. The Cards pulled off a very impressive and important victory punctuating a memorable senior night for the lone senior on the team, co-captain Tory Molnar ’07. Over the course of the weekend the Cards played their best volleyball in what was Molnar’s last home showing, not dropping a single game.

“I’ve never felt better playing volleyball than I did this weekend,” Anna Williams ’09 said. “The little things that we’ve been working on in practice and off the court as a team all came together.”

Lisa Drennan ’09, who entered the game ranked tenth in Division III in kills per game and first in the NESCAC, dished out 65 kills over the course of the nine games while hitting with a stunning .534 efficiency.

Ellie Healy ’10 averaged 12 assists per game while Caroline Rober ’08 led the team with an average of 2.0 blocks per game. Molnar, the team Libero, put together 49 digs while Rebecca Rodger ’08, leading the team in ace total, added 13, raising her season total to 83.

The past three years the Cards have entered the tournament as the eighth seed and lost in the first round to the host team. This year the Cards feel very optimistic about how the tournament will unfold.

“This year we’re in an amazing position and I know this team can make it to the finals,” Molnar said. “I’m so proud of all the hard work everyone on the team has put in, and I can’t wait for this weekend!”

The Cards will take on seventh-seeded Bowdoin once again in a first-round tournament match this Friday at Williams.
