Volleyball splits weekend matches

This past Saturday the Cards traveled to U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut for a pair of matches, one against the home team and one against Roger Williams College. The Cards put in a strong effort and split the two matches, opening with a loss to clear favorite Coast Guard and finishing with a resounding win over Roger Williams.

This season the Coast Guard team has once again risen to the top of the standings, currently holding first place in the New Englands Men’s and Women’s Athletic Conference with a 6-1 record within the conference and an 18-2 record overall. Coast Guard, a perennial regional powerhouse, was ready for Wesleyan from the get-go. The Cards came into the match with a lot of energy and played well, losing in three hard-fought games: 30-14, 30-20, 30-24.

“We lost in the first three, but really held our own against them,” said Lisa Drennan ’09. “They really are a great team and we stuck right there with them.”

Next up for the Cards was Roger Williams, a team they easily downed in three straight games, with a 24 point total margin of victory over the course of the three games. Caroline Rober ’08 played exceptionally well against Roger Williams, averaging 3 blocks per game. The Cards picked up their 14th win of the season with the victory and are feeling strong heading into their last big NESCAC weekend Oct. 27-28.

“We really played well against Roger Williams,” said Emily Dine ’09. “We played one of our best games in a while and it was our first win coming out of our Williams weekend rut. We completely dominated the game which was so important heading into our biggest week of the season.”

The team feels reenergized after falling into a slump over the last few weeks. With a critical weekend upcoming against key NESCAC foes, the Cardinals seem to be back on track, performing at a high level right at the heart of the season.

“You can tell we are back to our old selves,” said Ellie Healy ’10. “We were in a rut for a little bit, but now our energy and chemistry are better than ever.”

The volleyball team will face off against Salve Regina at home on Tuesday, before hosting Bowdoin, Colby, and Bates at home this weekend.
