Phil Banks ’07, Football
On Sunday, the football team earned its first victory since 2004 and Phil Banks was a major reason why. In the first half against Hamilton, the Cardinals failed to establish the running game as Banks had a quiet first two quarters. However, Banks and the Cardinals came out of the locker room with a vengeance as the team marched 72 yards down the field in seven plays, capped off by Banks’s five yard touchdown run to put the Cards up 7-0. After several key defensive stops, Banks sealed the victory in the fourth quarter by gaining 79 yards in the team’s last two drives which allowed the Cards to control the clock the rest of the way. On that day, Banks rushed 19 times for 92 yards, and caught two passes for 18 yards. The Cards will count on Banks to continue his success on the ground this weekend when they face Colby on the road.
Molly Adams ’07, Field Hockey
Facing a daunting schedule this past week–the Cards played three games in four days–the field hockey team was in need of some senior leadership. Despite an injured iliotibial band, Adams provided that leadership in notching a goal in the squad’s 3-0 trouncing of Conn. College on Saturday and then pocketed the game-winner in a 3-2 overtime victory at Mount Holyoke. The win over Mount Holyoke made the Cardinals 2-1 in the three-game stretch and evened Wesleyan’s record at 4-4. The goals were Adams’ first two of the season to go along with two assists. Though two goals in three games is always an achievement, her offensive production was doubly impressive considering her injury had led her to question how much she could even play over the weekend. Adams will continue to tough it out as the Cardinals try to work their way up the NESCAC standings this weekend at Colby (1-5).
