Coast Guard no match for waves of Cardinal attack

The men’s soccer team won 6-0 on Wednesday, posting up one of the most lopsided scores in Wesleyan soccer history against a supremely overmatched Coast Guard team. This win extended the team’s record to 6-0 this year, two wins shy of the best start in team history, recorded by the 1962 team.

Tri-captain Peter Glidden ’07 and Sam Griswold ’08 scored two goals apiece and Matt Nevin ’09 scored as well. Coast Guard even got in on the action, as the first goal of the game for the Cardinals was an own-goal by the team from New London.

“They wanted to be able to say, ‘we scored first,’ so they scored one for us first,” Chris Brown ’07 said about the initial goal, scored in the sixteenth minute.

Shortly after that, Nevin scored an unassisted goal and the rout began. Two minutes later, Glidden netted his first score of the year off an assist by Justin Mello ’08.

Glidden and Griswold took turns scoring for the rest of the game, as Griswold started up the second half scoring run for the Cardinals in the 55th minute on a pass from Matt Nevin. Thirty seconds later, Glidden got his second of the game after being assisted by Nick Whipple ’10.

Griswold, who is battling Nevin for the team lead in goals, tied him with his fourth of the year two minutes later with Mike Walker ’08 got his name in the box score with an assist.

It seemed like Wesleyan had the ball all game.

“More exciting than the goals was how well we moved the ball and kept possession,” Morgan Owen ’07 said. “Coast Guard’s defense couldn’t even really see us most of the time.”

Wesleyan’s stealth offense put 22 shots on the board, and three goalies combined for the shutout. This game was a good opportunity for some younger players to see action, and to work out the kinks before they face tougher opponents down the road.

Next up is Connecticut College on Saturday at home at 11 a.m. The Cards will look to win seven games without suffering a loss for the first time since the 1991 squad began the season 7-0-1.
