Power of insight, power to incite

What happened to “the movement” in America? There might be hundreds of thousands of people marching against the war(s) and against the direction of this country, but I didn’t see it on the network news channel, so I’m not sure.

What happened to “the movement” at Wesleyan? There might be hundreds of students spending countless hours fighting for prison reform, or an end to homelessness in Connecticut, or reproductive rights for all women, or sending a delegation to a March for Peace in NYC, but all I find is grumbling about “apathy” and a picture in the Argus (5/2/06) of two paranoid extremists holding a banner that says “The Bush Regime Engineered 9/11,” so I’m not sure.

I helped start “Incite Magazine” (www.InciteMagazine.org)with Thomas Coen (’07) and Rebecca Littman (’08) to make us sure. “Incite Magazine” is a progressive platform and community that links commentary and action, featuring articles that call for a compassionate and honest world while providing readers with the tools and resources to help fight for it. Each article concludes with ways in which the reader can get involved: sources for further learning, information on relevant organizations, candidates with similar beliefs, social action events like demonstrations and boycotts, educational events like lectures and teach-ins, and anything else that will help take opinions and discussions and turn them into pragmatic calls for a better society.

“Incite Magazine” rebukes the idea that the student body has become “apathetic” or “detached;” it challenges the Argus’s absurd and unethical depiction of Wesleyan activists as the irrational fringe. We hope to serve as a network for activist and advocacy groups at Wesleyan and in the broader community to connect with one another, broadcast the issues they are fighting for, inform the local community how to become more involved, and engage in thoughtful debate.

You can read our open letter and Mission Statement at www.InciteMagazine.org. We hope you will join us to connect, collaborate, and fight for progressive change.

“Incite Magazine’s” launch meeting will be held on Wednesday, 9/27, at 10:00 p.m. on the top floor of the Campus Center, Meeting Room 2. Come learn why we are, what we are, and how you can get involved. Email Editors@InciteMagazine.org for more information or to be put on the mailing list.
