Field hockey builds momentum

Sir Isaac Newton would be very proud of Adrienne Shea ’08 and Cortney Tetrault ’07. The two players have spearheaded wins in the last two games against Babson and Trinity to give the field hockey team some inertia and momentum as it heads into its fourth game of the season.

Last Saturday the Cardinals met the Bantams of Trinity in a tight battle. Shea scored the game’s lone goal on an assist from Molly Adams ’07. That was all that rookie sensation goalie Breen McDonald ’10 would need to lock up the 1-0 shutout win.

“I came into the season eager to play and I’m just glad to have an opportunity to play and help my team,” McDonald said.

Last Thursday against Babson, Wesleyan jumped out to an early lead with goals by Hailey Sarage ’09 and Shea. The onslaught continued as Shea contributed a hat trick of goals and Tetrault – an All-American – dished out a hat trick of assists.

The 4-1 win marked the beginning of a new era in Wesleyan field hockey, as the spiffy, new turf field was welcomed into the world of Wes athletics.

“We’ve adjusted really well to the turf since we were a grass team last year,” Shea said. “We’ve all been learning new moves that can work to our advantage on the turf.”

As the team gets set to face perennial powerhouse Middlebury, it could use more standout performances from McDonald (1.20 goals against average, 20 saves), Shea (4 goals), and Tetrault (15 shots on goal).

Perhaps more important, however, is for the team to continue gelling and gaining confidence together.

“We have some unfinished business with Middlebury,” Shea said. “So I think we are just going to be really fired up and go out there and dictate the play and let them react to us.”

Middlebury better watch out because while objects in motion tend to stay in motion, teams on a roll tend to roll over their opponents.
