As you are most likely aware, this academic year will be President Bennet’s last year as president of Wesleyan. A few weeks ago, Kofi Appenteng, a longtime member of the Board of Trustees, sent an e-mail explaining the procedure that will govern the search for Bennet’s replacement. To reiterate for those who missed this letter: a committee consisting of trustees, administrators, faculty and students will review nominations, and over the course of the next few months, make a selection. Following the precedent of the last Presidential Search Committee, there will be two students representatives on this committee. I will be one of those students, as WSA Vice President and Chair of the Student Trustee Committee, and the other student will be selected through the application process described in this e-mail.
If you are interested in nominating yourself for a position on the Presidential Search Committee, please send a statement to wsa@wesleyan.edu by Friday, September 15, which addresses the following questions:
Why are you interested in serving on this committee?
What are qualities you believe are important in a Wesleyan president?
What, in your opinion, are the best aspects of Wesleyan?
What, in your opinion, are the worst aspects of Wesleyan?
What, in your opinion, are the best attributes of Doug Bennet as a president of Wesleyan?
What, in your opinion, are the worst attributes of Doug Bennet as a president of Wesleyan?
Additionally, please include your name, contact information, class year, time commitments for the 2006/07 academic year and a current resume. Please respond with no more than 800 words.
Please keep in mind that this committee will be a large time commitment. It will involve several long meetings, often in locations other than Middletown (such as Stamford, CT). It will also involve a great deal of time in processing and reading resumes. If you apply, you make a commitment to be available for the entire year (you must stay on campus in the spring and you must not decide that you no longer want to serve on the committee once you have been chosen). You are also pledging to observe the confidentiality of the committee. Finally, you are making a commitment to represent the student body, and to put in the necessary time and effort to continuously communicate with the students. Beyond the arranged methods in which the committee will be reaching out to the Wesleyan community, as a Student Delegate you will be responsible for specifically seeking out students’ opinions and concerns.
