Best Male Rookie – Dallas Bossort ’09 – Hockey
Dallas Bossort ’09 was a key player of the men’s hockey team who helped lead it to the NESCAC Tournament. Bossort led the team with seven power play goals and was second on the team with nine total goals. His 17-point total was second on the team to Will Bennett ’07. Along with Scardella, Bossort’s defensive presence was also a large reason why the team limited opponents to 2.5 goals per game.
Best Female Rookie – Ali Fourney ’09 – Basketball
For the women’s basketball team, Ali Fourney ’09 provided quite the spark off the bench. The freshman, named the NESCAC Rookie of the Year, was a force to be reckoned with beyond the three-point arc, as she led the team with 35 treys, shooting over 34 percent from three-point land. Fourney also led the Lady Cards in scoring five times this season, even with Hannah Stubbs ’06 scoring over 15 points per game down low. With three of the top four scorers from this season due to graduate, Fourney will be looked upon to carry the scoring load for the Cards next season.
Best Male Athlete – Dan deLalla ’07 – Wrestling
In the best comeback story of the winter, Dan deLalla ’07 returned to the mat, winning the New England 157-pound wrestling title after missing the entire regular season due to an elbow injury. Never refusing to throw away his season, deLalla spent December and January rehabbing his elbow before returning to the mat two weeks before the Championships. deLalla upset top-seeded Jake Tyler of Springfield, earning an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships. At Nationals, deLalla drew a tough bid, facing third-seeded Robert Gingerrich of North Central in the first round. After falling 13-7, he was then defeated by Ryan Herwig of Delaware Valley in the consolation bracket.
Best Female Athlete – Ellen Davis ’07 – Track
After finishing 15th at Nationals in cross-country, Ellen Davis ’07 leads the nation this year in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:46, ten seconds faster than any other Division III runner this season. Heading into Nationals this weekend, she will be the top seed, looking to win her first National Championship. Davis also anchored the Distance Medley Relay to the New England Division III title this season, running the mile leg.
Best Women’s Team – Basketball
The women’s basketball team finished the season with an 18-8 record, qualifying for the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season. Even though the Cards were defeated in the first round at the hands of Muhlenberg, they did achieve success this year, as they claimed a piece of the Little Three Championship, sharing the title with Williams. In the first round of the NESCAC Tournament, the Cards scored perhaps their most emphatic win of the season, as they drubbed Trinity by a score of 72-42, but fell to Bowdoin the following day in the semifinals of the tournament. The Lady Cards had several individual accomplishments, as Hannah Stubbs ’06 was named to the All-NESCAC First Team, Ali Fourney ’09 was recognized as the NESCAC Rookie of the Year, and Ashley Mastrangelo became just the 10th player to score 1,000 points.
Best Men’s Team – Swimming and Diving
After finishing the regular season with a 12-4 overall record and a 7-4 dual meet mark, the men’s swimming and diving team saved its best performances for the NESCAC Championships where it finished fourth, the highest finish in team history. At the meet, Ben Byers ’07 led the team in the distance freestyle events. Josh Tanz ’06 and co-captain Dan Devine ’06 provided leadership with strong performances in the butterfly and breaststroke events respectively. In his first collegiate season, diver Dave Wilkinson ’09 scored valuable points for the team at the conference meet. Co-captain Rob Mitchell ’06 and Mike Pepi ’08 held down the long and short freestyle events during the regular season.
Best Male Athlete – Honorable Mention – Ben Byers ’07 – Swimming
All-American Ben Byers ’07 is no stranger to success in the pool. After achieving stellar success in the NESCAC and National Tournament last year, Byers came up with solid results once again in the NESCAC Tournament, repeating as champion in the 1,000 -yard free and finishing second in the 1,650-free. He also finished third in the 500-free at the NESCACs. Byers will look to continue his success at the Division III National Championships, held Mar. 7-9 at the University of Minnesota.
Best Male Athlete – Honorable Mention – Dave Scardella ’07 – Hockey
Like Delalla, Dave Scardella ’07 was another key athlete who came back from injury to lead his team to success. After missing a large chunk of the team’s season, Scardella came back to lead his team to a birth in the NESCAC Tournament, where it fell to Middlebury. Nonetheless, Scardella was named to the All-NESCAC Second Team as he led the conference allowing 1.87 goals a game and a .941 save percentage.
Best Female Athlete – Honorable Mention – Hannah Stubbs ’06 – Basketball
The anchor of the women’s basketball team for the past four years, Hannah Stubbs ’06 is arguably the best women’s basketball player ever to step foot on the floor for the Lady Cards. Scoring 1,395 points in her career, second most in Wesleyan history, Stubbs was named to the All-NESCAC First Team for the third consecutive year as she averaged 15 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.
