The men’s tennis team is looking to blow away both the wintry weather and this year’s competition when its season begins later this month. For the spring, the dynamic and relentlessly competitive captain Max Kates ’06 leads a team boasting six new freshmen.
“We have the tools to do really well, and it’s exciting to get to start new traditions, and emphasize team building, lifting, conditioning,” Kates said. “New guys bring new opportunities and a new team culture.”
The team of lucky 13 has been working hard in the off-season, focusing on consistency and strength training to transform its “high octane power” into match wins. This season the Cardinals have ten matches lined up, five of which will be played at home.
“The lineup is very deep and competitive at every position,” Kates said. “Doubles especially will be crucial.”
Jack Rooney ’07, Mike Frank ’08, Paul Gerdes ’09, and Jaafar Rizvi ’09 are key players looking to make an immediate and large impact in both singles and doubles. The team will also be solidified by dependable top performances from returning players, including Kates at the number one position and Tallen Todorovich ’07 at number two.
During spring break the men will be traveling to Santa Barbara, CA to soak up some good weather and work on their game outdoors. They will also be playing Caltech, another Division III team from the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, on Monday Mar. 13 in Pasadena, CA. Their first match will be against at Amherst on Mar. 30.
