Psi Upsilon hosts annual fire and police department dinner

The fire engines and police cruisers parked along High Street were not responding to burnt popcorn or malfunctioning fire alarms. Rather, on Feb. 16, the brothers of Psi Upsilon hosted a dinner honoring the public service of both the Middletown Fire Department and the Middletown Police Department.

This event, which has been traditionally held semi-annually for the past several years, brought not only a great number of firefighters and police officers but also Middletown public officials including councilmen Earle Roberts, John Robinson, Thomas Serra, David Bauer and the newly-elected mayor, Sebastian Giuliano.

While one might expect the evening to be filled with formalities, the brothers of Psi Upsilon, the firefighters, police officers, and politicians found each other quite agreeable. Conversation ranged from classical music to what Wesleyan was like in the early 90s, to Pratt & Whitney’s (who has a plant in Middletown) involvement in the development of nuclear powered airplanes.

Later in the evening, House President Tim Radcliff and Vice President JZ Golden offered remarks thanking the various departments for their continued public services.

“Far too often, we as Wesleyan students fail to recognize that we live in a larger community and applaud the work done by the officers and firefighters of Middletown,” Golden said.

Radcliff spoke about why everyone at Psi U enjoys having the annual dinner.

“Every semester Psi U looks forward to hosting the Fire and Police Dinner,” Radcliff said. “The tradition is a great way to express our thanks and continue to maintain a strong relationship between the Wesleyan and Middletown communities.”
