Cardinal Tournament Spotlight

ASHLEY MASTRANGELO ’06
Women’s Basketball

In the Cards’ victory over Trinity in the first round of the NESCAC Tournament, co-captain Mastrangelo led the high-powered Cardinal offense with a 21-point effort, 13 of those coming from the free throw line. For her career, Mastrangelo has scored 995 points, just five points shy of the coveted 1,000-point scoring club, where she will join her teammate Hannah Stubbs ’06. Look for Mastrangelo and company to get revenge against the Bowdoin Polar Bears on Saturday in Maine in the semi-finals of the NESCACs.

DAVE SCARDELLA ’07
Men’s Hockey

Since returning to the starting lineup, Scardella has been nothing short of unstoppable in goal for the Cards. Scardella leads the NESCACs with a 95.7 save percentage and 1.34 goals against average, establishing himself as the best goalie in the conference. Scardella is a large reason why the Cards grabbed the final playoff spot in the NESCAC Tournament, where they will face top seed Middlebury in the first round on Saturday.

BEN BYERS ’07
Men’s Swimming

Like his teammate Rob Mitchell ’06, Byers had another spectacular season for Wesleyan swimming this year. One of the highlights of the season for Byers was his victory over Robert Brown of Coast Guard, the defending NCAA Division III runner up in the 1650 free. Even more remarkable for Byers is that he is undefeated in 22 career dual-meet races of 1000 yards or more. Last year, Byers was a Division III All American in the 1650 free. Byers should find continued success as the swim team travels to Williams for the NESCAC Tournament.

BRITTANY DELANY ’09
Women’s Squash

In her first season of collegiate competition, Delany has certainly had her work cut out for her. Occupying the top spot for the Cards against some of the top competition in the country, Delany along with the rest of women’s squash has run into some tough opponents. However, in one of the team’s biggest wins of the season over Smith, Delany’s win at number one proved to be key as the team prevailed 6-3. Despite being blanked by Tufts and Hamilton in the previous two contests, Delany and the rest of the squash team aims to bounce back this weekend in the opening round of the Howe Cup hosted by Harvard.

ELLEN DAVIS ’07
Women’s Track

In the past few weeks, Davis has been on a tear for the women’s track team. At the New England Division III Meet at Tufts on February 18, Davis broke the Wesleyan team record in the 3,000-meter race with an impressive 9:54.55 time. Davis and her teammates also qualified provisionally for the NCAAs in the distance medley relay. On Feb. 10 at Boston University, Davis steamrolled much of the competition in the 5k event as she broke her old team record and finished with a time 16 seconds under the winning time at the NCAA Division III Championships last year. This year her time leads the nation in Division III at this point in the season. Look for more records to fall for Davis and the track team this weekend as they compete at Boston University in the New England Open Championship.

WES FUHRMAN ’05
Men’s Track

In his final season of eligibility, grad student Wes Fuhrman continues his quest to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships in the 5,000-meters. Two weeks ago in Boston, he broke the school record and ran 14:42 to put him 13th on the list to make Nationals. Usually the top twelve are selected for NCAAs, so Fuhrman hopes to lower his time a few more seconds. Today he travels back to Boston to compete in the 5k at the New England Open championships at Boston University.
