In recent years, the Argus has found it necessary to make a few revisions to its Wespeaks policy. The goal of the Wespeaks pages is to provide a space for our readers, largely made up of members of the Wesleyan community, to discuss issues on campus, as well as relevant issues elsewhere in the world.
Like nearly all university and professional newspapers, we reserve the right to withhold from publishing any submission we receive. While we do not like censorship, we will certainly not publish blatant advertisements or anything that the Wespeaks editor and I determine to be a clear personal attack. If the submission is over 750 words, it is unlikely that we will publish the piece due to space limitations.
Several times this semester, students and members of the administration have challenged our Wespeaks policy, arguing at times that it is too restrictive, and at other times that it is too permissive. We will not withhold from printing Wespeaks unless they clearly violate the policies that I have described above. We even publish pieces that criticize members of our editorial staff.
So enjoy the freedom you have here to express your opinions and perspectives in an open forum in the student newspaper. Wespeaks will be offensive if the author chooses that route, so we will not guarantee that no one will ever be offended. And remember, there are worse things than being satirized in print. But if something we publish offends or upsets you, feel free to write a Wespeak in response.
