Davis, Fuhrman set 5k records at BU

The clock stopped at 16:46.

Ellen Davis ’07 finished third overall in the women’s 5,000-meter to log the fastest time in Division III this season by eight seconds. Davis also broke her own 5,000-meter school record from last year, 17:12, also run at the Valentine’s Invite.

The clock also stopped at 14:42.

Wes Fuhrman ’05 crossed the finish line in the second heat of the 5,000-meter run at the highly competitive Valentine’s Day Invite at Boston University. Shattering the former record (14:51) set in 1984 by John Messer by almost nine seconds, Fuhrman improved his qualifying mark for the NCAA Championships in March.

With the first toss in Wesleyan history over forty feet, Kristy Williams ’06 broke the shot-put record of 39 feet, four inches set in 1995 by Joah Ionotta. The throw was marked at forty feet, four inches. Williams also placed second in the weight throw. (40 feet, six inches)

The fast track at Boston University led to fast times by every member of the Wesleyan distance squad. The strong junior class flexed its muscles as Jon King ’07 and Alex Battaglino ’07 broke the field in their heat of the 5k to finish first (15:11) and second (15:22) respectively. In the same heat, Anda Greeney ’07 worked his way up through the field to run a 15:32, while Nick Holowka ’07 dropped a 16:09, setting a new personal record in the process.

In the 3,000-meter race, Nate Huddell ’07 improved his time to an 8:58 to qualify for the New England Division III Championships next weekend at MIT.

“It was great to dip under nine,” said an ecstatic Huddell after his performance. “Hopefully I can run even faster next week and help add some points in the race for the team title.”

The mid-distance crew also turned in some fine performances, as Chris Greene ’08 ran a brilliant race in the 800-meters. After running in third for three laps, Greene moved behind the leader and unleashed a ferocious kick in the final 50 meters to win in 1:57. Nik Gavelis ’08 blew away the field in his heat of the 800 to finish in 1:58.

On the women’s side, Anna Schindler ’09 ran a 10:38 in the 3k, qualifying for the New England Division III Championships. Schindler has also qualified for the meet in the 800-meter as well as the 1,000-meters, the most events of any Cardinal athlete.

The sprint squad stayed at home last weekend to host Wesleyan’s final indoor home meet of the season.

Brad Litchfield ’09 dominated the competition in the 600-meters winning in 1:25 while Dan McLaughlin ’07 easily won the hurdles in 8.35.

On the women’ side Steph O’Brien ’08 won the 600-meters in 1:44.

The next action for the team will be Saturday at the New England Division III Championships, with the men racing at MIT, and the women at Tufts.
