After a bit of a long layoff the club beat is back. It’s been about three months since my last edition, which would lead one to believe that there’s a lot to report on the Wesleyan club sports front. Unfortunately there hasn’t been a whole lot of significant info to report regarding the teams covered in the previous issues of the beat.
Volleyball is in the midst of their season, mostly practicing two or three nights a week and playing the occasional game.
Not much to report for men’s club hockey, either. We’ve played a few games, if you’d like to call it that. Given up a goal or twelve on a few occasions. We did win our last home game before break against Clark, but besides for that bright spot we haven’t given ourselves much of a chance on the road, only suiting up eight or nine skaters on most occasions.
But focusing exclusively on those teams is old hat. Its time for a little gender equality on the club beat. That’s right. We have women’s club teams too, and although I was slightly aware of this, I failed to include them in my coverage. For this I apologize. My only defense is that firstly, I’m a dude. And secondly, my main sources of info are friends who play on men’s club teams. I made the same error when I first started this column and omitted any coverage of men’s water polo. But again, I have no excuse for it, and for this I again apologize. I’d like to thank Sarah Rosenberg ’06, a member of Wes Rugby (which is the official, non-gender specific name of the woman’s rugby team), for bringing this to my attention.
Over the next few weeks I’ll devote a significant segment of the column to put the spotlight on each of the women’s club teams, starting next week.
Thank you for taking a short but sweet walk on the club beat and I’ll see you next time.
