Wesleyan’s oversubscription policy is a bunch of stupid bunkum, and it has to end. When I (try to) explain oversubscription to people, they can’t understand it. “What? You can be penalized for taking too many classes in a department, even if it’s your major? That’s really completely retarded.” I find myself in agreement with those people.
Oversubscription threatens upstanding students’ eligibility for graduation on a regular basis, and that is wrong. English majors in particular are often caught in an oversubscribed bind because so many classes cross-list with English. The University says the policy is intended to make sure us Weskidz™ get a wide-ranging education, with plenty of different perspectives, worldviews, outlooks, and ways of knowing. That’s cool, but some of us just want to graduate in time and find ourselves having to take 7 classes all of a sudden for no good reason. I know I must sound like a whiny baby, but this is so unfair I just pooped my Luvs.
We already have GenEd requirements annoying us to diversif—here is no need for an additional restriction, especially one that can be so damn oppressive.
Last year the administration made a pragmatic and admirable move by abolishing acceleration fees, making it possible for students to graduate early without forking over a lot of money. I would encourage the administration to see this as the “thin edge of the wedge” for supporting gender-neutral housing, I mean abolishing oversubscription.
