Dear ResLife,
I’m a molecular biology major so I normally leave the writing to people who know what they’re doing. But, I’m really pissed off—enough that I don’t care about all the grammatical mistakes I’m making in this letter.
Until two weeks ago, my friend Hannah Ray was House Manager of Sign House. Two weeks before break, she attended a party in Hewitt 8 that received a noise complaint. She was not on duty at this time. The RA on the hall of the party asked everyone to go into the rooms and be quiet, which they did. Next, Public Safety showed up and started knocking on doors because of the noise complaint and underage drinking. They also took pictures of people who were in the rooms. Hannah wasn’t drinking, and she had gone into the room quietly when asked. However, she didn’t have her WesID, so after she gave them her name and ID number, PSafe took her picture. When you got wind that she had had her picture taken, you called and asked what happened. Hannah told you the above story, and then you fired her. You stated that you fired her because she was at a party where there was a noise complaint and you don’t think she was representing ResLife correctly. Hannah then appealed the charge and was told that the decision is final.
Hannah is the best house manager on this campus. I don’t even live in Sign House but I get program emails from her twice a week, which is way more programs in one week than my freshman RA held for the entire first semester. She is also one of the most responsible, helpful, and honest people I know. ResLife, I’ve seen you do some pretty obnoxious things in the past four years, but this is completely ridiculous. Why would you fire one of the best staff members you’ve ever had because of a misunderstanding on her part about complaints at a party? I don’t know if you’ve ever been to a party, but sometimes, it’s hard to hear or understand what’s going on.
ResLife, if you have minds at all, please change them. You are depriving the student body of an awesome house manager, you’re discrediting yourselves, and you’re losing one of the best staff members you have.
Sincerely,
Emily Levy
