Curling not just for Canadians

The inaugural season of curling kicks off this weekend against McGill University at home. McGill has one of the top curling programs in North America, but Cardinal team members are optimistic about their chances this weekend.

“Curling is so hot right now,” said an enthusiastic Mike Jones ’09, “Our team is really ready to take it to the ice and bring the pain to McGill. We have been mastering the’hit and roll’ technique and the hackweight takeout.’”

Most students are excited about the upcoming curling season, and a huge turnout is expected on Saturday.

“Wowie,” said Jonah Blumstein ’09 “I’ve always secretly been a huge curling fan, and wondered why. It turns out I was secretly an illegitimate child born in Canada, which helps explain it. Unfortunately I never had the skill or coordination to curl myself, which is why I’m a long-distance runner.”

Not all students express Blumstein’s feeling about the curling squad.

“Not only is the curling squad stealing all our women, they’re also taking our ice time,” said a disgruntled hockey captain Will Bennett ’07.

But in general, the reaction to the new team is positive.

“We’re very excited about the future of WesCurl,” said Athletic Director John Biddiscome. “If this gets off the ground we may be looking into possibilities for Wes-bungee jumping as well as Wes-speed skating.”

Unfortunately speed skating would add problems to the already congested rink.

“We really believe that we that the sky is the limit for this season,” said captain Tony Starks ’06. “I mean look at what the men’s soccer and cross-country teams did in the fall. In addition to be the best looking teams in the NESCAC, they dropped their competition like it’s hot.”

The match starts at 3 p.m. on Saturday, but fans are encouraged to arrive early because a huge crowd is expected and seating is limited.
