Winter is on the horizon and although certain indoor sports are just getting underway, the games played out on the fields must prepare to take a break until spring comes around. This past weekend club rugby played its last game of the fall season, falling 27 to 12 at Roger Williams. What had been a close game at the midway point got away from the Cardinals, as Roger Williams scored three times in the second half to take the game handily. A victory may have brought with it a playoff birth for the Cardinals, but it just was not meant to be. Rugby finished with a 1-4 record, beating Hartford while losing to Rhode Island College, Wheaton, and Roger Williams and forfeiting a match to Brandeis because of some bad weather over the break. The team will be back in action next semester so for all you rugby fanatics, take a deep breath, and then think about the fact that there’s plenty of hockey on the way to satisfy your high-speed, contact sport needs.
Club soccer is also nearing the end of its season. Last weekend they played their last (well, only) home game of the season against UConn. After a slow start to the game due to the cold, wet, and windy weather, Max Barry ’06 managed to score the game’s lone goal on a sweet threaded pass from Gideon Unkeless ’06. The 1-0 win was almost marred by an eye injury to Adam Rose ’07, who had to go to the hospital. Luckily, as teammate Joseph Feldblum ’08 reported, “he survived to fight another day.”
This Saturday the team will be playing in a round robin tournament at Connecticut College, against both the host Camels and the Bears of Brown. After that they too will pack it up for the winter, leaving me with even less to write about. I’m thinking that within the next couple weeks the Club Beat will turn into “As Club Hockey Turns.” Or maybe it’ll just consist of my accounts on the ice, entitled “I Got Decked, and other Painful Stories From the Desk of Jeremy Powell.” I’m excited. Aren’t you?
Let’s move from the ridiculous to the sublime and talk a little club water polo. As I mentioned last week, we’ve got a big event coming to campus this weekend: The New England Division Championship. We have the third seed in the tourney despite having an identical regular season record as Williams, as well as a split of two games (this is because Williams outscored us overall in the two games). Yale is the top seed and the final three teams are Tufts, Coast Guard, and Amherst. There are two brackets: A, consisting of Yale, Tufts, and Coast Guard and B, the Little Three foes, Williams, Wes, and Amherst. The match-ups for Saturday have been set and I’ve included the schedule below. This event should be a lot of fun so everyone should definitely make an effort to come down to the pool this weekend to cheer your team on as they take on some of the best club teams in the country. For those of you who have never seen a water polo game (a group that includes yours truly) here is your chance. Thanks again for tuning into the club beat and hopefully I’ll see y’all at freeman this weekend.
