Women’s soccer scores big in win

After launching 55 shots and scoring eight goals in ninety minutes on Wednesday, the dust cleared on North Field and the women’s soccer team earned its first win of the season in fine fashion, defeating Mitchell College 8-1.

Freshman Marissa Trevisan opened the scoring right away with an unassisted goal to put the Cardinals on the board. From there the offense only intensified, scoring seven goals in the first thirty minutes of play. Danielle Crystal ’07 netted two goals, while Samantha Blank ’09, Becca Morrell ’06, Nicole Gray ’08, and tri-captain Natalie Cohen ’06 each added one as the Cardinals went on a goal scoring frenzy throughout the first half.

The constant offensive pressure applied by the Cardinals prevented Mitchell from launching any kind of attack, while the defense stifled their opponents, allowing only one shot the whole game. Wesleyan kept the Mitchell defense reeling as their goalkeeper Jenna Wilder was forced to make 26 saves.

The eight-goal affair was one short of the team record set in 1991 against Nichols College. In reality, this record was easily in reach, but the Wesleyan coach limited the way the team could score in the second half.

Perhaps this is the offensive spark the team needs to start rolling on NESCAC opponents. After suffering losses in several extremely close games this season, Wesleyan launched almost as many shots on Wednesday, that it had launched in all of its previous six-games. Gray spearheaded the attack with eight shots while senior tri-captain Sarah Hopkins ’06 added six.

The real tests for the team begin this Saturday as they face a strong Colby team at home at 11:00 p.m. followed by a match against Tufts, the current top team in the NESCAC on Tuesday.
