Playing their second road game of the week, the field hockey team out-dueled the Trinity Bantams by a score of 2-1 during Saturday’s contest in Hartford.
The Cardinals made good use of the momentum gained from Wednesday’s victory over Babson as they went ahead early and never relinquished the lead. Ten minutes into the game, Julia Perciasepe ’07 drew first blood, connecting on a centering pass from Molly Adams ’08.
Trinity then knotted the score at 1-1, but would fail to find the net again. Despite being outshot 14-10, Wesleyan’s consistently strong defense managed to contain the Bantam attack. The Cardinal backfield played a solid second half behind goalkeeper Caitlin Kelly ’07, who recorded 11 saves on the day.
Just ten minutes after halftime, Wesleyan received the game winning goal from Amanda Nickels ’08, who scored on an unassisted sweep-shot.
The win brought the Cardinals’ record to 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in NESCAC play. Wesleyan has emerged victorious from each of its last two contests at Trinity’s Sheppard field, a turf surface on which the Cardinals, a team accustomed to natural grass, are not quite as experienced as many of their NESCAC opponents.
On Saturday the Cardinals will host Middlebury, the defending NESCAC champion and NCAA Division III runner-up.
