Cards battle in VT volleyball tourney

After finishing 3-1 in its first tournament, the Wesleyan women’s volleyball team traveled to Middlebury this past weekend to get its first taste of NESCAC competition.

On Friday, despite winning the first game of the match, Wesleyan fell to the host team, three games to one. Tory Molnar ’07 and Lisa Drennan ’09 led the team in defensive digs with 22 and 13 respectively. Drennan also recorded 11 kills in the loss to Middlebury. Sophomore standout Rebecca Rodgers continued to impress, earning 45 of the team’s 47 assists.

Looking to rebound from the loss to Middlebury, the Cardinals faced off against Hamilton on Saturday. Wesleyan swept the Continentals, taking three straight games for the win. Rodgers again controlled the setting of the ball, recording all of the team’s 35 assists, while setting up Jettie Word and Drennan for 11 kills each. Molnar again played a strong defensive game recording 15 digs, while preventing Hamilton from scoring over twenty points in two of the three games.

Fresh off the win, Wesleyan took to the floor a few hours later to face Little Three rival Williams in the final match of the weekend. Despite a strong team effort the team fell to the defending NESCAC and New England Regional Champion Ephs.

“We had a lot of momentum coming off the Hamilton game,” said Molnar. “We were hanging with Williams for a while, but unfortunately we couldn’t close it out. Hopefully, we can bring it when it counts, at the NESCAC tournament.”

After the weekend’s games, the team record stands at 4-3. The Cardinals continue their season on Tuesday, with a non-conference game, 7 p.m. at Rhode Island College.
