Women’s soccer roundup

On the strength of a single goal in the second half, Mount Holyoke knocked off Wesleyan women’s soccer on Wednesday. The loss is the Cardinals’ second of the season after dropping their opener to Williams last weekend. The Lyons took the advantage on a Marika Austin goal in the 63rd minute that was shot past Cardinal keeper Andrea Guiliano ’09.

In the loss, the Cardinals peppered the Mount Holyoke goal with shots, firing 10 in the first half alone. On the game, the newly offensive-minded Lady Cardinals took 17 shots to the Lyons’ 8. Becky Malik ’09 led the way for Wesleyan, launching five shots, four on net. Samantha Blank ’09 added a pair of shots on goal as well, but the Lyon keeper, Tiffany Picard held strong, grabbing 11 saves on the afternoon. Behind Picard’s shutout, Mount Holyoke held on to the 1-0 victory, their third win of the season.

Despite allowing the goal, Guiliano still looked fierce in goal, as the frosh keeper nabbed three saves in only her second collegiate game.

The Cardinals look to pick up their first W of 2005 this Saturday, when they travel to Hartford to face off with Trinity College in a NESCAC showdown. Last season, the Cardinals fell at home 3-2 in overtime to the Bantams and will look to change their fortunes Saturday.
