WSA campaigns need re-evaluating

While campaigning, WSA presidential hopefuls should address the concerns of all students, not just a select few.

I walked into MoCon today to have someone for the WSA Presidental Candidate accost me, asking me if I would like “Shuttles services to bars.” I had to do all I could to stop myself from bursting out in laughter.

Not that we don’t already have an issue with alcoholism on this campus, but taking student activity fees and funneling them into a service from which only about one-quarter of the student population will benefit is absurd! Continuing to enable and encourage the consumption of unhealthy amounts of alcohol is the last thing a student government should be doing.

I asked the campaigner why his candidate has focused on shuttles to bars as an issue. As someone who pinches my pennies to be at this fine school, I was dismayed that he had no concept of fiscal responsibility. Further, he rambled incoherently about energy policy, completely befuddling me.

Let’s get real, folks. There are more important issues to the student body of Wesleyan than shuttles to local taverns. Let’s campaign on continuing the transparency dialogue between the administration and the student body. Let’s develop services that benefit ALL of the students, not just a small portion. Let’s work to better improve communication between the institutional elements of Wesleyan and the student element.

When candidates are ready to take their candidacy serious, and willing to tackle difficult issues, they’ll get my vote.
