Tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Beta Theta Pi house, Stamford’s Mayor Dan Malloy will be speaking to the Wesleyan student body. Mayor Malloy is one of the leading contenders to receive the Democratic nomination for the governorship of Connecticut. He is also considered by many the most progressive of the Democratic nominees for governor. Mayor Malloy began his career as a prosecutor for the New York District Attorney’s office, and was extremely successful, losing only one case over his tenure. Under his eight-year leadership as mayor of Stamford, Connecticut, the crime rate has dropped an astounding 64%. Through his efforts, Stamford is now considered to be one of America’s safest cities to live in.
Mayor Malloy is also a leading figure in the movement to increase education spending and methods in Connecticut. He is an advocate of leveling the educational playing field to create equal opportunities for all the residents in his city, no matter their economic class. His programs for young children have already allowed many working class Stamford residents to obtain two years of preprimary schooling for their children. If elected, he would definitely like to find ways to expand programs such as this to the rest of Connecticut, as they have been tremendously successful in Stamford.
So tonight, at 7:30 p.m., anyone who comes to the Beta Lecture Series has an opportunity to engage in an informal Q&A session with the Mayor. As his former personal aide, I have maintained a solid relationship with Mayor Malloy. Recognizing Wesleyan’s traditions of political activity and progressive attitude, he is enthusiastic regarding the student body’s stance on the issues affecting Connecticut and the greater New England region. This is a tremendous opportunity for Wesleyan students be recognized, and to have questions answered by a legitimate candidate for governor.
