Islamo-Fascism or imperialism?

On Monday night, Wesleyan will play host to a debate on U.S. foreign policy between Dr. Michael Parenti and Christopher Hitchens. The event represents a remarkable opportunity for the student body to witness a real exchange of ideas between two scholars well versed in the issues that have come to define George Bush’s foreign policy.

Dr. Parenti has been a critic of U.S. foreign policy for over 25 years, and his 2003 book, “The Assassination of Julius Caesar” was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. His most recent work, “Superpatriotism”, explores the cultural dynamics that underpin America’s approach to foreign policy in recent years.

Christopher Hitchens stands as one of the most unique and compelling figures amongst public intellectuals, as his arguments in favor of the war in Iraq are steeped in his long association with progressive politics. A former columnist for “The Nation” and book critic for “Newsday,” he is now a contributing editor for “Vanity Fair” magazine. His books include “The Trials of Henry Kissinger,” and his most recent, “Love, Poverty and War: Journeys and Essays.”

The debate will be held in the Memorial Chapel. Admission is free and open to all. Doors open at 7:30, with the event set to begin at 8:00. Show up early if you want to be assured of a seat.
