With the arrival of spring the dining areas are relatively empty and food is taken outside to soak up sun and socialize. While I support eating outdoors, there is no need to leave food everywhere for the workers to clean up. On Monday, I witnessed someone drop an entire box of French fries right outside the Campus Center and instead of picking it up, stared at it for what felt like ten minutes and then proceeded to walk away.
From my experience, it does not require much time or energy to throw out one’s trash. Perhaps it was an only child who did this or simply someone without hands? And yet, I have little sympathy in both of these scenarios. If you are someone who has never had to clean up after yourself perhaps you could write a reminder to throw your trash away on an obnoxiously bright pink post-it note. Some of you might be saying to yourselves, “But Isa, we’re giving these people work!” or “This is their job!” (These are probably the same people who think sweatshop labor is a generous form of employment) and to you I say: lazy motherfucker, pick up your trash and read a book (or two). “Those people” have enough work as it is and they do not need to spend twenty minutes everyday picking up French (a.k.a. “Freedom”) fries off of the ground. Essentially, continue to run around naked, eat outdoors, and be merry so long as you clean up after yourself and act responsibly.
