The Student Budget Committee (SBC) announced a plan to endow a fellowship in honor of longtime WSA coordinator Cari McDermott, at the WSA’s first meeting since spring break. At the close of this year, McDermott will end her twenty-seven year career as WSA coordinator.
Since 1978, McDermott has been an indispensable resource for student groups on campus. WSA coordinator is a staff position responsible for working with the SBC to manage a budget of approximately $600,000, used to fund the more than two hundred campus student organizations. In addition, the coordinator helps students locate necessary financial resources and insure that student groups follow the fiscal policies of the University.
Her job is not only limited to financial matters. She also assists students in planning events and negotiating contracts with speakers, bands, and other performers. McDermott manages the WSA office and works closely with all WSA members.
The endowment will be one component of the WSA’s effort to recognize her contribution. A banquet in her honor will also be held during Reunion and Commencement weekend, where students, alumni and parents will have an opportunity to pay tribute to her.
McDermott’s proposed endowment will be used to fund student groups and events. It will be made available through an application process.
The campaign for the endowment will begin in the coming weeks, and will likely include alumni, student, and parent mailings as well as an on-campus fundraiser.
Half of the money raised will go towards the Wesleyan Annual Fund, specifically tagged for Financial Aid, and the remaining portion will be used to establish the Cari McDermott Fund.
The creation of the endowment will be the first time a specific fund has been created to honor an individual’s contribution.
