Taking Shakespeare to a world he probably never imagined, Professors of Theater Ron Jenkins and I Nyoman Catra brought “Caliban Remembers: A Balinese ‘Tempest’” to the CFA Theater February 25 and 26.
The adaptation, which significantly cuts the original text of “The Tempest,” occurs in Bali one year after Prospero has left Bali, Caliban’s island. Using the sacred Balinese tradition of shadow puppetry, Caliban re-enacts Prospero’s last day on the island. The two-dimensional puppets Caliban uses are embodied by actors on the stage behind him. The actors move in both traditional Balinese dance movements as well as two-dimensionally, in order to capture the essence of the flat puppets.
Catra played the puppeteer Caliban, as well as the witch Sycorax as remembered by Caliban. Catra’s wife, Desak Made Suatri Laksmi, played Ariel and provided the music for the production. Other cast members
