One women’s indoor track record and one men’s indoor track record fell at the New England Open Championships at Boston University over the weekend.

Ellen Davis ’07 completely shattered the team record in the 5,000-meter event, finishing third with a time of 17:12.09. The previous mark of 17:33.44 stood for twenty years until Davis rewrote the record book. Davis, whose time was third best in Division III this season, will represent the Cardinals in the NCAA Division III Championships in March.

The men broke a record of their own, as Chris Greene ’08, Nik Gavelis ’08, Owen Kiely ’06, and Matt Moss ’05 finished ninth in the 4×800-meter relay. The 7:49.96 time bested the 21-year old team record by almost four seconds.

“Coming into indoor, the 4x800m record seemed relatively safe,” Greene said. “Coach thought we could break the distance medley record and was focusing on that. It wasn’t until we ran a 7:56 on the flat track at Tufts that we even considered ourselves capable of breaking it. I’m proud to have been part of it, and seeing Mossy split a 1:54.7 on his anchor leg was amazing.”

The final meet of the regular season is Friday’s Last Chance Meet at Yale, which is sponsored by Trinity College.

“This coming Friday, we’ll take down the next relay record on our list: the distance medley relay,” Greene said.
