Upon picking up last Tuesday’s issue, we were outraged by the Argus’ decision to spotlight gambling addict Mark Goodman ’05 on the cover. Given all the truly worthwhile social contributions made by members of the Wesleyan community over break, we were appalled by the celebration of Goodman’s greed, at the expense of recognizing some of his more worthy peers.
Was there an article on the group of students who worked for months to create an improvisational performance piece to raise awareness for organic cage-free eggs? Unbelievably, no. And, where was the article on the students who bravely avoided showering for three weeks in a noble effort to conserve water? Conspicuously absent! Finally, did anyone pay tribute to the scholar-activists who continue to protest so fiercely against the use of gendered nouns and adjectives in Romance languages? Disappointingly, no.
While all of these accomplishments and more went unrecognized, Mark Goodman passed his time vacationing heteronormatively with his girlfriend in the Bahamas. We highly doubt that Goodman would be willing to part with more than one percent of his ill-gotten gains to contribute to tsunami relief or other noteworthy causes. We also hope that, in the future, the Argus will be more responsible when choosing what actions to applaud.
