In the Dec. 10, 2004 Argus, Matthew Montesano spoke of “a zone between ‘getting financial aid’ and ‘easily paying for college’,” and how many middle-class families (himself included), were in that zone and had difficulties affording school. Mr. Montesano’s belief that students/families in “the zone” have more trouble paying for school than financial aid students is incorrect. I’m sorry Matthew (and you other “middle-class” students), but a chasm does not exist that you have unfortunately fallen in. I am a financial aid student. I too borrow books from the library instead of buying them. I too pinch pennies. Being on financial aid does not mean the cost of Wesleyan is easily afforded, but rather it means that a Wesleyan education becomes a possibility. For you, without financial assistance, Wesleyan is a possibility. For me, it is not. Financial aid levels the playing field, allowing myself the luxury of your position.
