Recently, Wesleyan’s janitors have been struggling to end a trend of racial discrimination, worker endangerment and intimidation of union organizing by their employers at American Building Maintenance. Their efforts have been focused against area supervisor Zbignien Gryko, whose mistreatment led the janitors to demand series of investigations by ABM.
We are now pleased to announce that the janitors have achieved a major victory. Due to the work of the janitors, their union stewards and union representative, the United Student Labor Action Coalition and the Wesleyan administration, Mr. Gryko is being permanently removed from campus and retrained. This victory would also not have been possible without the Argus’ coverage of the events leading up to this welcome conclusion.
However, the problems our janitors face here ate Wesleyan are not confined to Mr. Gryko. The management at ABM has consistently failed to treat its employees with respect and maintain their safety at work.
Together with the janitors, USLAC invites you to a forum with janitors and students to celebrate our victory and and educate the campus about the history of this struggle and the next steps that need to be taken. The forum will be held this Monday at noon in the Butt C lounge. There will be an array of refreshments ranging from pasta for the early-risers and donuts for those who have slept late.
The mistreatment perpetrated by Zbignien Gryko must not be repeated. Join us to learn more about what this vital segment of the Wesleyan community is going through and to help ensure that our community is one of respect and justice for students and workers alike.
