Wesleyan’s water polo team took third overall in the New England Division this weekend, going 2-2 in four games.
The Cardinals opened the tournament against Amherst with a 15-7 victory. In their second match, against Williams, they came back from a 9-3 halftime deficit, making it a 10-8 game with 45 seconds to play. John Haley ’07 had a chance to make it 10-9 with 30 seconds left and a one on none opportunity, but Williams goalie Zach Orjuela came up with a huge save and caught Wesleyan in transition, passing out for a breakaway goal to seal an 11-8 victory. The Cardinals went on to lose to eventual champion Yale 9-4 on Sunday morning but came back to notch a 8-7 win over Coast Guard to take third place honors.
Mac Clonan ’05 led all scorers with eight goals, tallying four spots against Amherst and Williams. Haley added six of his own, including the tying and go-ahead goal in the fourth quarter against Coast Guard. Dan Devine ’06 shot well from the outside, picking up five goals; Mike Roguly ’05 played steadily from the drive position, picking up six goals; and Matt Brownstein ’07 contributed three goals while playing tough defense against opposing hole sets. Also playing well in the tournament were Josh Tanz ’06, Ben Byers ’07 and Dominik Heynen ’05. Goalie Mike Molina ’07 was the team’s MVP over the playoff weekend, playing extremely tough in the cage for the Cards.
Wesleyan finished the season 10-6 overall, the third best team in New England and the Division III National Champions.
