Unite for Democratic change

“If you don’t implement a Republican agenda now, when do you?” said Richard Viguerie, the dean of conservative direct mail in yesterday’s New York Times. As Wesleyan students we respond: If you don’t implement a progressive agenda now, when do you?

On Tuesday the overwhelming mood on campus was one of frustration, sadness and defeat. This mood has evolved. Wednesday night over a hundred students, of all class years, gathered in 200 Church and discussed their grievances. However disappointment was not the theme: we began to plan an extensive, all-inclusive movement of resistance that we hope to spread across the country. We became energized by the prospects of such a national movement and now wish to spread this enthusiasm.

The first step in this movement is to create a united coalition that respects and gains strength from the identities of individual and groups. The movement will draw from dedication and resources of student groups and soon involve all other progressives. It will respect and gain strength from the identities of all individuals and groups: we need you.

Suggested actions included networking between colleges and local communities, utilizing and reforming the media, self-education and examination and bridging the ideological gap dividing our country.

Join us next Thursday night. We need your passion. We need your ideas and skills. We’re not alone, helpless or defeated. We need our professors, our alumni, the local community, our friends and family to unite. We invite you all to help shape our vision. (Thursday, Judd 116 at 7:30 p.m.)
