Response to Wallach

Usually when someone writes something about me it’s because they are filing a grievance or restraining order of some kind, so I was excited to read Wallach’s latest column which I heard mentioned my previous installment of On the Offensive. Though he misquoted me, making the claim that I spelled “theater” as “theatre” (commonly known as “the sissy spelling”), that is the only fault I could find. Wallach has demonstrated a laudable ability that is rare on the pages of the Argus; he is able to look critically at the views of others in a sophisticated, nuanced way. He criticizes without disparaging, a capability which is all but lost in today’s political discourse. Wallach commented on the views of several people, both positively and negatively, and then linked those critiques to his own opinion and conclusion. It is a pleasure to read something that is not reduced to simplified platitudes and ideological dittos.

While I’m engaged in this journalistic love-fest, I want to mention that Michael Andolina’s “Sassafras” is sharply perceptive and provocative but with a range that can showcase both blithe humor and pointed social commentary. Andolina and Wallach couldn’t be any more different in tone and style, but both demonstrate what is great about the Argus column page.

As I occasionally enjoy my own work, I want to end by saying great job to the editors for finding three columnists who are worth reading.
