Throw Culture, the co-ed ultimate frisbee team, and the Old Methodist Rugby Football Club are set to begin their seasons. Both teams are coming off of fine spring campaigns. Old Methodist finished as the runner-up in the nation’s largest and most prestigious tournament, despite the lack of matching uniforms or an official coach, while Throw Culture reached the quarterfinal of the NESCAC tournament.
The rugby squad looks forward to another productive year as they play on a new field with a new-look roster. Last year, the team went 8-2 (3-0 NESCAC), including an impressive run in the Beast of the East tournament in Providence, R.I. At the Beast, the team outscored their opponents 137-0 before falling 17-13 to the University of Rhode Island in the final.
“We have lost a lot of strong players to graduation and to injury, not to mention our beloved broken-down sand pit also known as Fauver Field,” said player-coach “Singapore Ben” Newman ’05. “With that said, we have some legitimate studs returning. Obhi ‘Wan Kenobi’ Hazarika ’05 not only is the heart and soul of our team, but he gives us an edge that no other team has – the Jedi force.”
One of Old Methodist’s other strengths will be “the wrath brought on by the destruction of our beloved grassy knoll,” said player-coach, “Sexy” Dave Delcourt ’05.
Newman also said to watch for “Grizzly” Adams ’08, “who drew first blood of the year at practice on Tuesday.”
Another player worth following is Jack Dresnick ’05, whose athleticism will be a great asset to the club. With all of these things going for them, Newman hopes that this year’s fan base will increase.
“We need some fans. Not the casual ‘I’m on my way to the soccer game’ fans. We need some diehard, face-painting, shit-talking, Will Ferrell ‘We’re going streaking to the quad’ kind of fans. I’m hoping the ”Field of Dreams“ mantra ‘If you build it, they will come’ is true because we now have bleachers. We didn’t build them though.” Newman said.
When asked for a prediction about the team’s success this coming season, he posed the question, “How do you say ‘Steam roll the competition’ in Spanish?”
Old Methodist holds daily practices on Foss Hill at 4:30 p.m. It opens its season next Saturday on the Long Lane fields.
Although its season does not begin until mid-October, Throw Culture has already begun to set its roster. Everybody is welcome to attend the daily practices which take place on Foss Hill at 4 p.m. Co-captains Phil Hanoian ’07 and Sarah Fajardo ’07 are looking for talented players to help them elevate their record higher than last season’s 3-9 mark. Throw Culture expects to host a tournament in late Oct.
