Softball slays Lyons

After dropping a tough 13-4 game to Elmira College last Thursday and ending last week with two tough losses to Tufts University on Saturday, Cardinals softball bounced back with a 7-5 win over the Mount Holyoke Lyons. The Cardinals now hold 10-19 record overall and are fourth in NESCAC West Division with a 2-6 record.

“We’ve done a much better job hitting the ball in the last few games. In particular, Ashley Cecchinato’s [’05] bat has really come alive and co-captain Sue Frost [’05] has continued to hit the ball consistently for us,” said head coach Jenn Shea.

Though last Thursday’s loss was against non-conference Elmira College, the loss still hurt the Cardinals as they went into Saturday’s games against Tufts. Saturday’s games also marked Senior Day for the Cardinals who honored second baseman Kelly Harris ’04, who has played the most games for Wesleyan with 118 games, and manager Josh Wing ’04.

Wednesday’s game against the Lyons started out slow for both teams. Both squads were cold through three innings before the Cardinals broke open the scoring in the fourth with two runs. Beth Bernstein and Diana Garcia both scored in the fourth to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. Before the fifth inning finished, the Cardinals added five more runs to the board. The Lyons hit for three more in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough. The Cardinals took the game 7-5.

“It was good to come out with a win, I don’t think it was out strongest performance but hopefully we can use it as momentum for the Bates game,” said Lyn Leber ’06. “[Bates is] in the same position as us. We are a strong team, but our record doesn’t show it. It should be a good game, neither team knows what to expect.

The Cardinals will take on Bates in their last game of the season at home on Saturday at 1 p.m.

”As for this week, we have a great opportunity to end the season on a high note with some wins,“ Shea said. ”If we play up to our potential, then we are capable of winning two on Saturday against Bates.“
