University should stop telemarketers

Rrrrriiiiing… rrrrrrriing…ugh! I wake up abruptly, startled and confused. It’s 6:30 am on a Saturday morning, approximately 3 hours since I went to bed. My natural instincts make me stumble out of bed towards the source of the disturbance….. rrrrrrrriiiiingggg. In my daze, I wonder who would be calling at this hour. I assume that the caller must have to convey an urgent message. “Hello,” I say in my squeaky morning voice, at this point quite concerned.

“Hi Sarah, I am here to offer you great credit card opportunity….blah…blah…blah…” The monotone voice sounded all too familiar. Agitated beyond belief, I slam the phone on the receiver.

This is one of many examples of how telemarketers are repeatedly irritating students on campus by calling dorm phones at all hours of the day. If you don’t give in to their marketing ploys, you might be called again. It doesn’t matter if you’ve declined previous offers. While Wesleyan seeks to provide its students with the knowledge, resources, and experiences to be successful in the “real world,” learning to wrestle with telemarketers is not an essential skill that needs to be acquired before graduation. Wesleyan University strives to provide the optimal learning environment for its students. Telemarketing is a disruption of tranquility, an invasion of privacy, and just outright obnoxious. Thereby, Wesleyan University ought to take action against the dorm phone telemarketers, especially those who disrupt the sleep cycle.
